The Kent County Sheriff's Office participates annually in what is call Shop With A Sheriff (SWAS). This typically takes place on the first two Saturdays in December each year at participating Meijers. Children are identified throughout the year who are in need of the basics and get selected to participate. They are brought to Meijer and start off with a ride in a Sheriff cruiser with lights and sirens blazing! They are dropped off at the entrance and paired with a uniformed deputy and go through the store and check off the items they need. The shopping trip ends with a visit with Santa and treats. We also are expanding this program to high school kids although much less profile to respect their privacy. The SWAS program for older kids is new and will start in 2019.
